Example
Example: a 50 × 60 mm biometric photo for a Turkish passport renewal in the UK
Emre (fictitious), a Turkish citizen living in Manchester, is renewing his passport through the consulate, and his appointment checklist asks for a 50 × 60 mm biometric photo on white. His partner takes it with a phone in front of a pale grey wall: emre.jpg, 3024 × 4032 pixels, his head 1,060 pixels from chin to the top of the hair. Background: White.
- 50 × 60 mm at 300 dpi is 591 × 709 pixels. The head, chin to crown, is set to 45 mm, the middle of 42–48 mm (70–80% of the height): 532 of the 709 pixels.
- To turn 1,060 pixels of head into 532, a 1,178 × 1,413 pixel rectangle is cut around his face and scaled down.
- The 177 pixels left over go 40% above the hair, 6 mm, and 60% below the chin, 9 mm.
- With White, he is cut out of the photo and the grey wall becomes plain white.
| Phone photo (3024 × 4032) | Head | Cut out | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| From about 1.5 m, shoulders showing | 1,060 px | 1,178 × 1,413 | made, all from inside the photo |
| Close-up, hair 250 px from the top | 2,750 px | 3,056 × 3,667 | made: 3.2% at the top and 0.5% at each side are filled with white |
| Chin 232 px above the bottom edge | 1,500 px | 1,667 × 2,000 | not made: it asks for a photo that shows the shoulders |
emre-turkey-photo.jpg: 591 × 709 pixels marked 300 dpi, 50 × 60 mm when printed at 100%. On the ID photo sheet at 50 × 60 mm, 2 fit on a 6 × 4 in print, 15 on A4 and 16 on US Letter, with 2 mm cutting gaps. A neutral face, eyes open and no glasses are down to the photo he takes.
How it works
- Photograph yourself straight on against a plain, light wall, in even light, eyes open and mouth closed.
- Drop the photo here: it is set on white and the head is laid out to the 50 × 60 mm rule.
- Download the 591 × 709 pixel photo (50 × 60 mm at 300 dpi) and print it at that size.
Frequently asked questions
- Which documents use 50 × 60 mm?
- The Turkish passport, the ID card and the driving licence all take the same biometric 50 × 60 mm photo. Visa applications for other countries use their own sizes.
- What else is checked at the counter?
- A white background, a neutral expression, no glasses or headwear (religious headwear aside), even light with no shadows, and a recent photo. The tool gets the size and the head right; the rest depends on the photo you take.
- Can I print several on one sheet?
- Yes — take the photo to the ID photo print sheet and choose 50 × 60 mm.
- How big is the head in the finished photo?
- From the chin to the top of the hair it is 45 mm, the middle of 42–48 mm, which is the 70–80% of the 60 mm height the rules describe: 532 of the 709 pixels, with 6 mm above the hair and 9 mm below the chin. Your photo is cut and scaled to fit that, however close the camera was.
- Why was my photo not made?
- Either the photo ends too close under the chin, so the shoulders would be cut off, or the head is so close to the top or the sides that more than a fifth of the frame would fall outside the photo, or the hair already touches the top edge. Up to that, missing room above the head or beside the shoulders is filled with plain background. Step back and take it again with space all round.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. The face is found and measured in your browser. The free plan handles 3 images per run, 20 MB each and 5 runs a day.
