Example

Example: a photo taken too close, finished at 35 × 45 mm on white

A photo taken in a hallway by a family member, 3000 × 4000 pixels: a person (shown here as a simple drawn figure with short dark hair and a grey jumper) facing straight on against a beige wall, standing so close that the hair is only 120 pixels below the top edge. Chin to top of the hair: 1,780 pixels. Background: White.

After
  1. The face is found, which gives the chin; the top of the hair comes from the cut-out of the person: 1,780 pixels from chin to crown.
  2. The print is 35 × 45 mm at 300 dpi, 413 × 531 pixels, and the head is set to 34 mm, the middle of the 32–36 mm range: 401 pixels, so the photo is scaled to 22.5%.
  3. That needs an area of 1,832 × 2,356 pixels around the face, starting 110 pixels above the top of the photo, for 4.4 mm of space above the hair that the photo itself does not have.
  4. The missing strip is 4.7% of the picture, under the fifth that may be filled, so it is filled with white and the person is cut out onto the same white, with no seam where the photo ended.
Measure On the finished photo
Photo 35 × 45 mm, 413 × 531 pixels at 300 dpi
Head, chin to top of the hair 34 mm (allowed: 32–36 mm)
Space above the hair 4.4 mm, the top of it filled with white
Chin to the bottom edge 6.6 mm
Background White, in place of the beige wall

A JPEG named photo-australia-photo.jpg (for a photo called photo.jpg), marked as 300 dpi so it prints at exactly 35 × 45 mm. Had the hair touched the top edge, no photo would be made: the tool asks for one with space above the head instead.

How it works

  1. Photograph yourself straight on against a plain, light wall in even light, with no shadow behind you.
  2. Drop the photo here. The head is laid out to measure 32 to 36 mm on a 35 × 45 mm print.
  3. Set the background to white or leave the photo's own if the wall is already plain.
  4. Download and print at 35 × 45 mm, or fill a sheet with the ID photo sheet tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is it the same as a UK or Schengen photo?
The print is the same 35 × 45 mm and the head range is close, so one photo often serves for several. The differences are in the rules around the photo rather than its size — expression, glasses, head coverings — so check the Australian Passport Office requirements rather than assuming a photo accepted elsewhere will pass.
Does a working holiday visa use this size?
Australian visa applications are usually made online and ask for a digital file with its own limits rather than a print. Use this page for the geometry, then the image compressor if there is a file-size cap.
Will a photo taken at home be accepted?
The size and head measurement are what this guarantees. Everything else is judged on application, against requirements the Australian Passport Office publishes. Read them before printing.
What if the photo was taken too close?
Up to a fifth of the picture may be missing above the head or beside the shoulders: that part is filled with plain background, the colour you chose or the wall’s own. If the hair touches the top edge, or the photo ends too close below the chin, no photo is made and you are asked for one with more room.
What pixel size is the file?
413 × 531 pixels, a JPEG marked as 300 dpi, which prints at exactly 35 × 45 mm. Print it at that size, or fill a sheet with the ID photo sheet tool so one print gives several copies.
Is the photo uploaded?
No. The face is found and the crop is made inside the browser tab.
