Example
Example: two couch photos cleaned before they go on a marketplace listing
Selling a couch online, with two photos taken in the living room: 20261018_143205.jpg from one phone and IMG_4127.HEIC from an iPhone. Both still carry where and when they were taken.
- The JPG is copied block by block: EXIF with the GPS position, date and phone model, XMP, comments, maker blocks and any extra image saved after the photo, such as a depth map, are left out.
- Its colour profile stays, and so does its rotation: the phone stored the photo as turned, so a small EXIF block holding only that one tag is written back.
- The HEIC cannot be cleaned in place, so it is decoded and saved as IMG_4127.jpg, which carries no metadata at all.
| In the file | 20261018_143205.jpg after | IMG_4127.HEIC after |
|---|---|---|
| GPS position | Removed | Removed |
| Date and time taken | Removed | Removed |
| Phone model and camera settings | Removed | Removed |
| Rotation tag | Kept, as the only tag | None: no metadata at all |
| Image data | Copied byte for byte | Saved as a high-quality JPG |
| File name | 20261018_143205.jpg (the same) | IMG_4127.jpg |
Two photos to upload with nothing in them but the picture: the JPG with its image data untouched, the HEIC now a JPG. Keep the originals for yourself, and save the cleaned JPG in another folder, since it has the same name.
How it works
- Drop the photos you are about to share. JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC photos all work.
- Press Remove metadata. EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC and comment blocks are removed from each file.
- Download the photos one by one or as a ZIP. JPG, PNG and WebP keep their exact image data; HEIC photos are saved as JPG.
- Share the cleaned copies instead of the originals.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a photo reveal without me knowing?
- Phones store the GPS coordinates where a photo was taken, the date and time, the phone model and camera settings, and sometimes the owner's name or a serial number. Anyone who gets the original file can read them with free tools, which can reveal a home address from a picture of the living room.
- Does removing metadata reduce the quality?
- No. For JPG, PNG and WebP only the metadata blocks are removed and the compressed image data is copied unchanged, so there is no re-compression at all. HEIC cannot be cleaned that way, so those photos are converted to a high-quality JPG.
- Will my portrait photos turn sideways?
- No. Phones often store rotation as a metadata tag instead of turning the pixels. That one tag is kept, on its own, so photos stay the right way up; everything else is removed.
- Do social networks not remove it anyway?
- Several large ones strip it from what they publish, but the original file keeps it when you send photos by email, share a cloud link, attach them in apps that send the original, or put them on your own website.
- Does it keep the file name?
- JPG, PNG and WebP photos keep their names exactly, so save them in another folder than the originals, or the download will be renamed. HEIC photos come back as .jpg with the same name before the dot.
- What else is removed from a JPG?
- Besides EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comments: the maker blocks some phones add, and extra images stored after the photo itself, such as depth maps. The colour profile is kept, so the colours look the same.
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. The files are cleaned in your browser. The free plan handles 3 photos per run, 20 MB each and 5 runs per day; Pro cleans a whole album in one go.
