Example

Example: a dog photo as a 100-drill chart on US Letter, 9.8 × 13.1 in, 13,300 drills

dog.jpg, a portrait phone photo of 3000 × 4000 pixels: a brown dog sitting in front of a cream wall. The page’s own settings are kept: Square drills (2.5 mm), 100 drills across, at most 30 colours, Remove lone drills on, Symbols on colour, Paper US Letter.

  1. 100 across, so the height follows the photo: 4000 × 100 ÷ 3000 = 133 rows. One square is one drill, 13,300 in all, the white chest and the pale wall included.
  2. Finished size is squares times drill size: 100 × 2.5 mm = 25.0 cm (9.8 in) across, 33.3 cm (13.1 in) down. Round 2.8 mm drills make the same chart 28.0 × 37.2 cm (11.0 × 14.7 in).
  3. Page 1 has the preview, the size and the key (DMC number, colour name, drills, bags of 200); the chart follows on 4 Letter pages of 50 columns × 67 rows, the centre marked with red arrows.
  4. Bags are counted with a tenth over, then rounded up: a colour of 1,000 drills needs 1,100, which is 6 bags; 182 drills become 200.2, which is 2 bags.

dog-diamond-painting.pdf and dog-diamond-painting-preview.png. For a 30 × 40 cm (12 × 16 in) canvas, choose 120 across: square drills give exactly 30.0 × 40.0 cm. On the free plan a small line with our name is printed at the foot of the last page.

How it works

  1. Add a photo; crop it first if only part of it matters.
  2. Choose square or round drills, how many across and how many colours.
  3. Check the preview; fewer colours make bolder areas, more keep the detail of a face.
  4. Download the chart and the key with drills and bags to order.

Frequently asked questions

How big will the painting be?
Drills across times the drill size: 100 square drills of 2.5 mm make 25 cm, and the same with 2.8 mm round drills make 28 cm. The first page of the chart gives the finished size in centimetres and inches.
How many drills do I need to buy?
The key counts the drills of each colour and gives bags of 200 with a tenth over, since a few always go missing. Drills are sold numbered by DMC colour, which is what the chart uses.
Square or round drills?
Square drills fill the canvas edge to edge and give a sharper picture; round ones are quicker to place and leave small gaps that catch the light. The preview shows the difference.
Is the white left empty as in cross stitch?
No. A diamond painting covers the whole canvas, so white and pale areas get drills of their own.
How do I fit a 12 × 16 inch canvas?
Choose the drills across from the canvas width: 120 square drills are 11.8 in (30 cm), 150 are 14.8 in (37.5 cm). The height follows the photo, so crop a portrait photo to 3:4 first: 120 across is then 160 rows, 15.7 in (40 cm), which fills a 30 × 40 cm canvas, sold as 12 × 16 in.
Can I print the chart on A4 instead of Letter?
Yes: set Paper to A4. The chart squares stay the same size, and the pages split the same way at these widths: 100 drills across is still 4 pages of 50 × 67, and 120 across 9 pages of 40 × 54.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The chart is made in your browser and the photo never leaves your device. On the free plan a small line with our name is printed at the foot of the last page.
