How it works

  1. Add the picture — a photograph, a screenshot of a site you like, a painting.
  2. Choose how many colours you want. Five is a palette; twelve is closer to an inventory.
  3. Read the list. Each colour comes with its hex code, ready to paste.
  4. Click anywhere on the picture itself for the exact colour of that one pixel, which is what you want when you are matching a brand colour.

Frequently asked questions

How are the main colours chosen?
By grouping every pixel in the picture by colour and taking the largest groups, so what comes back is what the picture is actually made of rather than what looks pleasing. A photograph of a forest gives you a lot of greens, because it is a lot of greens.
Why is the colour I picked slightly different from the one I expected?
Because you are picking a pixel, and JPEG compression moves individual pixels around. Pick from the middle of a flat area rather than near an edge, and a PNG gives a truer answer than a JPEG.
Can I get RGB or HSL instead of hex?
RGB is already there: each line gives the hex code, the rgb() values and the colour’s share of the picture, such as “#F6A04D rgb(246, 160, 77) 40%”. For HSL or a CSS variable, paste the hex code into our colour converter.
Is the picture uploaded?
No. It is read pixel by pixel in your browser and never sent anywhere.
