Example

Example: an English teacher in Florianópolis charging R$ 120 a lesson by Pix

Oliver Grant (fictitious) teaches English in Florianópolis. His students pay by Pix, so he wants a QR code to print and a copy-and-paste code to send by message, both already set to R$ 120,00, the price of a lesson. His Pix key is his mobile number, typed as (48) 99123-4567.

  1. Pix key (48) 99123-4567 is read as a mobile number and written into the code as +5548991234567, the form the payer’s bank looks up.
  2. Name Oliver Grant; city Florianópolis, which loses its accent: Florianopolis. Amount 120,00 or 120: both become 120.00.
  3. The copy-and-paste code is 129 characters and ends in its 4-character checksum, F372. At the default error correction, M, the QR code is 49 × 49 modules.
  4. Download the 1024 px PNG for the printed sign, and scan it with a bank app before printing to see the name and amount come up.
Field in the code What goes in it
26 (Pix account) br.gov.bcb.pix and +5548991234567
52 (category) 0000
53 (currency) 986, the Brazilian real
54 (amount) 120.00
58 (country) BR
59 (name) Oliver Grant
60 (city) Florianopolis
62 (transaction id) *** (none)
63 (checksum) F372

A student who scans it sees Oliver Grant and R$ 120,00 filled in and only confirms. Without an amount the code is 119 characters and the student types the sum, better for a mix of lesson lengths. The message “Aula de inglês” would make it 147 characters, without the accent.

How it works

  1. Enter the Pix key: CPF, CNPJ, a mobile number with its area code, an e-mail or a random key.
  2. Enter the name and city the payer should see; accents are removed, as the Central Bank’s format asks.
  3. Add an amount to charge a fixed sum, or leave it empty so the payer types it.
  4. Download the PNG to print or send, or copy the copy-and-paste code beside it.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with every bank?
Yes. It is the Banco Central do Brasil’s static BR Code, the same format bank apps make, and every app with Pix reads it. Test it with a small amount before printing.
Can the same code be paid many times?
Yes. A static code does not expire; with an amount in it, every payment through it is for that amount.
Why is my key refused?
CPF and CNPJ numbers carry check digits; with a wrong digit no code is drawn, so there is never a code that pays nobody. A mobile number needs its area code.
I’m a foreigner living in Brazil. Can I receive Pix with this?
Yes, if you have a Pix key registered at a Brazilian bank or payment account: the code only names the key, and the money goes to the account that key belongs to. Without a Brazilian account there is no key to put in it.
Can my landline or a foreign phone number be the key?
No. A phone key is a Brazilian mobile number: area code, then 9, then eight digits, written into the code as +55 and the digits. A landline such as (48) 3222-1234, or a number from another country, is refused. Use your CPF, e-mail or random key instead.
Does the money go through Nouplo?
No. The code only names the key; the payment goes straight from the payer’s bank to the account. The code is made in your browser and nothing you type is sent.
